Best Places to Photograph Boiling Lake: A Photographer's Guide

## Photographing One of Nature's Most Dramatic Scenes Boiling Lake is one of the most photogenic natural wonders in the Caribbean — but capturing it well requires knowing where to stand, when to shoot, and how to handle the challenging lighting conditions. After 30 years of guiding photographers (amateur and professional) to Boiling Lake, here are my best tips. ## The Main Viewpoint The designated viewing area gives you a direct view down into the lake. The best shots here are taken: - **Early morning (9:30–10:30 AM)** when the sun is at the right angle to illuminate the steam - **After rain** when steam production increases dramatically - **From a low angle** — crouch down to get the steam rising against the sky ## Hidden Viewpoints ### The Left Ridge Approximately 50 metres to the left of the main viewing area, a rocky outcrop gives a completely different perspective — you can see the full crater rim and the steam rising against the valley below. ### The Valley of Desolation Overlook On the descent into the Valley of Desolation, there is a viewpoint that shows the entire volcanic landscape — sulphur vents, boiling mud pools, and the steam from Boiling Lake in the distance. This is one of my favourite shots on the entire trail. ### The River Crossing The third river crossing on the trail has a beautiful composition — clear water, volcanic rocks, and rainforest canopy. The aerial view of Boiling Lake is extraordinary — but the steam and wind conditions make flying challenging. ## FAQs **Can I bring a tripod?** Yes, but it adds weight. A small travel tripod is useful for waterfall shots. **Is the steam bad for camera equipment?** The sulphur in the steam can be corrosive over time.
