A complete packing guide for the Boiling Lake hike, including dry season and wet season lists, gear recommendations, and expert advice on why each item matters.
## Packing Right Makes All the Difference
The Boiling Lake hike is 13โ14km of tropical rainforest, volcanic terrain, and unpredictable weather. What you carry โ and what you leave behind โ can make the difference between a comfortable adventure and a miserable slog.
After 30 years of guiding, I have seen every packing mistake imaginable. Here is exactly what you need.
## The Essential Packing List
### Footwear
- **Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support** โ this is non-negotiable. The trail is muddy, rocky, and uneven. Trail runners are acceptable in dry season but boots are always better.
- **Hiking socks** โ wool or synthetic, not cotton. Wet cotton causes blisters.
### Clothing
- **Moisture-wicking base layer** โ avoid cotton
- **Light fleece or mid-layer** โ the lake area can be 10ยฐC cooler than Roseau
- **Waterproof rain jacket** โ not a poncho. A proper jacket with hood.
- **Hiking trousers or shorts** โ quick-dry fabric
- **Change of clothes** for after the hike
### Hydration & Nutrition
- **2โ3 litres of water** โ there is no reliable water source on the trail
- **Electrolyte tablets or sports drink** โ you will sweat significantly
- **High-energy snacks**: nuts, energy bars, dried fruit
- **Lunch** โ sandwiches, wraps, or local provisions
### Safety & Navigation
- **Fully charged mobile phone** โ signal is limited but emergency calls work
- **Small first aid kit** โ blister plasters, pain relief, antiseptic
- **Whistle** โ for emergencies
- **Headlamp** โ in case the hike runs long
### Sun & Insect Protection
- **Sunscreen SPF 50+** โ even on cloudy days
- **Insect repellent** โ DEET-based for the rainforest sections
- **Sunglasses**
- **Hat or cap**
### Photography
- **Camera or smartphone** โ fully charged
- **Waterproof case or dry bag** for electronics
- **Extra memory card**
## Dry Season Packing List (DecemberโMay)
In dry season, conditions are more predictable but you still need rain protection. Prioritise lightweight, breathable clothing and sun protection.
## Wet Season Packing List (JuneโNovember)
In wet season, waterproofing everything is essential. Pack your electronics in dry bags, bring gaiters if you have them, and wear your most waterproof boots.
## What NOT to Pack
- **Jeans** โ heavy, slow to dry, cause chafing
- **Flip flops or sandals** โ dangerous on volcanic terrain
- **Large backpack** โ a 20โ25 litre daypack is ideal
- **Valuables** โ leave jewellery and expensive items at your hotel
## FAQs
**Can I rent hiking gear in Dominica?**
Some tour operators offer basic gear rental. I recommend bringing your own boots if possible.
**Is there anywhere to buy supplies near the trailhead?**
There are small shops in Laudat village, but selection is limited. Stock up in Roseau the evening before.
